Kat graduated from University of British Columbia's Faculty of Law, and clerked with the BC Supreme Court before being called to the BC Bar in 2006. She practises family law, health law and advises on professional regulation at Harper Grey LLP in Vancouver.

In 2004 Kat was Recognized as one of Canada's "Best and Brightest" university scholars by Maclean's Magazine, and was named the best all-round graduating student at UBC Law in 2004. She was designated a Wesbrook Scholar by UBC in 2004.
