People's Law School has assembled the following Law Related ESL Lessons into a Clicklaw Wikibook for the benefit of adult ESL and ELSA Net instructors and their students. ELSA stands for English Language Services for Adults. The ELSA program provides basic and intermediate level English training for adult newcomers to Canada. ELSA is government-funded and is free to students. This set of modules offers lesson resource packages on law related topics such as:

  • consumer law,
  • the courts,
  • driving in BC,
  • family law,
  • fundamentals of law,
  • paying taxes,
  • renting a home,
  • avoiding scams,
  • talking to police,
  • working in BC,
  • young people and the law,
  • bullying and workplace harassment,
  • elder care,
  • family violence.

How do I use this resource?[edit]

People's Law School has developed numerous lesson modules, each centered around a law related topic that could affect a newcomer to the province. Each lesson module is designed for instructors who work with newcomers, and contains general resources essential to the module (such as a booklet on each topic, and in some cases videos). Most lesson modules will also have one or more instructional package that vary based on Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level.

Instructors should familiarize themselves with the source material (especially the topical booklets from PLS upon which each module is based), and then explore the downloadable lesson plans, worksheets and assessment tools available in each instructional package, depending on the CLB they are teaching at.

Lesson modules[edit]

This list should contain all 15 topics as lesson modules eventually
