Some of the information on this page about adopting from government care and what MCFD is responsible for versus what the Adoptive Families Association of BC is responsible for is incorrect.

In the Introduction, the third sentence should read "The second kind requires the involvement of the provincial Ministry for Children and Family Development for children in the care of the government, or... ."

In the list headed "The Adoption Act talks about four specific types of adoption:" item 3 should read: "the placement of a child by the Ministry for Children and Family Development," (remove "which actually happens through the Ministry's contractor;"--this is not true; all child placements are done by MCFD directly).

The steps to adopt from government care also aren't correct. The correct steps are available at the bottom of this page: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/life-events/birth-adoption/adoptions/how-to-adopt-a-child/adopt-from-foster-care/adoption-process

The only step in that process that is facilitated by the Adoptive Families Association of BC is the facilitation of the online version of the Adoption Education Program. Everything else is done by MCFD.

"Adoption workers" are MCFD adoption social workers, not Adoptive Families Association of BC staff. Adoption matching and placement are done by MCFD.

Families can reach out to the Adoptive Families Association of BC at any point before, during, or after adoption for information and free, confidential support.
